What started over a century ago, in a quiet dairy farm in Nantwich, has today evolved into a thriving business that is loved and recognised as one of Cheshire’s most prolific cheese makers.
It all started with Joseph Heler’s grandmother at Laurel’s Farm, who used to make one whole Cheshire cheese every day as a family tradition. With a little love, magic and no small amount of dedication, this fine art was passed down through the family as far as Joseph himself, who in 1957 decided to set up a company to share this magnificent product with the world.
What originated as one cheese a day became 40lb rounds of the same quality product, which in 1960 was recognised as a benchmark of excellence, earning 8 Championships in national British cheese shows.
This was by no means the end of this story as entrepreneurial Joseph decided to expand, branching out into other types of British cheese including Red Leicester and Double Gloucester, and expanding his reach across all of Cheshire, and ultimately across the whole of Great Britain. In 2001 the business gained recognition in the shape of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for work, developing the very first low-fat cheese, and in 2017 it celebrated the landmark of its 60-year anniversary.
Unfortunately, the world lost Joseph back in 2016. However, Mike and George, Joseph’s son and grandson, have kept the business going. It remains the independent family business it has always been, and still operates from Laurel’s Farm just as it did a century ago. While the size of the business has grown immensely, the care, attention and time honoured methods have not altered and are still as important to Mike and George as they were right back in the beginning.
Here at British Food Box, we love this story and the passion Joseph Heler clearly had for very personal traditions, and we too hold a similar set of core values to this day. This is why we are a proud distributor of Joseph Heler artisan products and we are honoured to put our name alongside theirs. We too believe in hard work, knowledge, and a passion for real ingredients.
What started as a means of us paying our way through university, has ultimately led us to find our true calling and our weekend jobs have become a full-time way of life now at British Food Box. We are John and Hannah, and with the completion of our degrees in agri-business and veterinary medicine respectively, this has armed us with the tools we need to make British Food Box thrive. Add to this our pride in what we do, and the desire to see artisan producers succeed, and we truly have a recipe for excellence!
